Research Assistant Training Program
Please complete the following modules. Once done, you may begin collecting data. This should take approximately 5 hours to complete. Keep in mind, you must compete 25 data extraction forms to be acknowledged on a publication. Most research assistants do not meet the criteria for authorship. You can ask you PI if you are interested in authorship, letters of recommendation, or to use Valliant Foundation as a reference.
Module 0: Pick a project(s) and watch the video!
You can work on multiple projects, or just one! Remember you are required to work approximately 5h-8h per week on average. This time can be split between projects. Keep in mind, if you wish to collect data for the physiology/ psychiatry study, that will be in person and on the weekends, and it is suggested that you apply to work on a second study because that one might not be published for a while and there will only be data collection missions every so often. The research in diabetes and sexual assault will be online asynchronous and our goal to publish it by august 20th 2025.
Module 1: Meet with a librarian
You should schedule your appointment with the librarian and immediately begin module 2 prior to your meeting. It is okay if you haven’t finished the whole handbook, but it’s a good idea to get started so you know what type of work you will be doing.
Step 1) Select a location
Step 2) Select College of Health & Social Sciences
Step 3) Confirm a time within the next week if possible
Step 4) Copy and Paste the background and methodology of the study into the section titled “how can we help you?”
Bring a copy of your paper to the meeting to talk to the librarian with.
Module 2: Read the training handbook
Be sure to carefully read through the handbook (~45min read) and then complete the certification exam (~15 min) it is very important NOT to use chatGPT because it it hallucinates often and makes a VERY bad look on the paper if we use it for our study and it hallucinates. DO YOUR OWN WORK PLEASE!
Module 3: How to search for papers
This is the second job description, showcasing duties and responsibilities.
Module 4: Identification & Screening of articles
You must document EVERY study you look at, regardless of whether they meet the inclusion & exclusion criteria in your search strategy document
Use these forms EVERY time you read a study title during your search
You will not have to read every study in its entirety; you should stop the moment you notice the study does not meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria and move on to the next study. DOCUMENT DOCUMENT DOCUMENT!
Module 5: Data Extraction Forms
After identifying (and documenting) a study that meets the inclusion & exclusion criteria, please read through it in depth and fill out the following data extraction form for the study. Please make a copy of this google sheet and share it with valliantfoundation@gmail.com
